Sunburn is one of the most common problems that people face during summer season. Sunburn is the result of overexposure to ultra violet rays. Sunburn can be immensely painful even though it looks very harmless. If not taken care of, it can cause serious burns. Being a difficult condition to treat ,it is better to avoid getting sunburnt than try to treat burnt skin.

Home Remedies for Sunburn
1. Treating Burnt Skin With Cooling Agents
When the skin is burnt, the first step towards healing is to cool the skin form the effect of heat. There are a number of ways to do that. If you have aloe vera and vinegar in its pure form, apply either of the directly on the burnt area. If you do not have them, mustard oil is another way to remove the heat from the skin. Rub mustard oil on the affected skin and let it dry naturally.
Peppermint and lavender oil are known for their cooling and soothing properties. You can apply them directly on the skin. Chamomile oil and lavender oil can also be used for taking a medicinal bath to sooth the burns. As a last resort, you can grate potatoes after washing them and use them on the burnt skin to heal the burnt skin with the effect of starch.
2. Honey And Lime for Sunburn
When you have sunburnt skin, utmost care must be taken to keep it moisturised. Honey being a natural moisturiser will help in regaining the lost moisture and also in healing the boils and blisters. The top layer of sunburnt skin needs to be peeled off and new skin cells must be encouraged to regenerate.
Lemon being an acidic agent helps in peeling the top layer and helping in bringing out new skin cells from beyond. Lemon also helps in removing any burn marks on the skin that must have appeared due to sunburn. Mix two parts honey and one part lime and apply on the sunburnt skin. Wash off with warm water after 20 minutes.
3. Turmeric and Yoghurt can be Used for Sunburns
Turmeric can heal wounds and can prevent infections due to its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Yoghurt is good for regaining the acid and alkaline balance of the skin and healing it naturally with its potent acids and enzymes. Yoghurt is also a cooling agent and can immediately soothe the burnt skin. Add a pinch of turmeric to yoghurt and use it as a compress on the sunburnt skin. You can spread it on cheese cloth and compress the burnt area or apply directly on the burn.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar for Sunburnt Skin
Apple cider vinegar is good if you have sunburns that are spread all over your body. Make sure that you get apple cider vinegar that is aged in wooden containers for treating sunburn. Sunburnt skin needs to restore its chemical balance which will speed up the healing process.
For making an apple cider bath for your burnt skin, take two cups of pure apple cider vinegar and add it to a tub of warm water. Soak the body for 15 minutes in this solution. Apple cider vinegar will soothe the skin and relieve the pain and discomfort associated with burns.
5. Baking Soda for Healing Sunburnt Skin
Baking soda can restore the acid and alkaline balance of the skin that is sunburnt. For preparing a soak with baking soda, take ¼ the cup of baking soda and add to it a bath of warm water. Soak in this healing bath for 15 minutes for the healing action to take place. Continue every day till your skin is free from the clutches of sunburn.
6. Aloe Vera for Healing the Skin
The skin regenerating properties of aloe vera can do wonders for sunburnt skin. Aloe vera revives damaged skin and encourages cell development thereby accelerating the whole process of healing. Aloe vera is also a rich source of vitamin A and C and is also a great antioxidant. These are all great ingredients in reviving damaged skin. If you have aloe vera at home, you can cut the stalk and remove the gelatine and place it on the sunburnt areas.
Keep it in place using a gauze and surgical tape and leave it overnight for best results. The stalk that is already cut can be stored in the refrigerator in plastic bags. Replace the gelatine every day two times until the sunburn heals completely.
7. Sunburnt Skin Can be Treated With Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is beneficial to the skin as well as the body. Its soothing properties can take the discomfort out of the burnt skin and also calm the mind from the trauma caused due to the burn. Apply lavender oil directly on the skin and leave it on.
Lavender oil can also be combined with aloe vera to give a stronger healing mixture when applied on the burnt skin will give better and faster results than the other herbal remedies. Lavender can also be used as a soak for your body by adding it in the tub while you take bath.
