Vision Enhancing Vitamins For The Eyes

Eyes light up our world and it is therefore of great importance that eyes must be very carefully tended to. Whilst we are all aware about the importance of vitamin A for our eyes, we are not really aware of anything else that can enhance our eyes and reduce its discomfort.

Checkout the vitamins that help keep your eyes sound and healthy and your vision crystal clear as well.

Vitamins for the eyes

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is the most essential vitamin for general eye health. Intake of adequate amounts of Vitamin A can help prevent night blindness. Night blindness if not treated carefully can lead to a host of problems like swollen eyes, xerophthalmia, dry eyes, ulcers in the cornea and ultimately loss of vision. Vitamin  A is also essential for preventing the onset of cataract and macular degeneration.

The risk of eye problems increase if you are a smoker or a drinker, as smoking prevents absorption of vitamin A and drinking destroys vitamin A. A diet rich in vitamin A must be increased in smokers and drinkers to combat the loss. Vitamin A can be acquired from cod liver oil, carrots, chicken liver, beef, sweet potatoes etc.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C too is very essential for the eyes as it helps in reducing macular degeneration and cataracts that set in as we age. It may also be helpful in the prevention of Glaucoma and easing the pressure inside the eyes. Smokers and drinkers have to again be very careful to take increased amounts of vitamin C as these habits will tamper with the absorption of the vitamin. People who are diabetic too must take extra amounts of vitamin C to prevent damage to the vision.  Foods like berries, broccoli, citrus fruits, red sweet peppers, leafy vegetables etc. must be taken for vitamin C.

Vitamin C

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is mostly associated with skin and immune system health. But, they are also good for cataract problems and macular degeneration. Up to 25% reduction in macular degeneration is expected with the intake of vitamin E. However, the right dose must be prescribed by your doctor as vitamin E in excess can lead to issues like bleeding. Nuts and seeds like almonds, hazelnuts, mangoes, sunflower seeds, peanuts etc. are all good natural sources of vitamin E.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

These compounds are known to reduce your chances of age related macular degeneration. However, there is still mixed response regarding its effect. Both these compounds can be found in spinach, collard greens, kale, yellow and orange vegetables and fruits etc. For taking the benefit of lutein from food, the food has to be cooked so that lutein will be released into the food.

After a certain age, all human beings start losing their eye sight and sometimes macular degeneration can culminate in blindness. Thus, as you age, it is important to increase the intake of all the above mentioned vitamins with the expert help of a doctor who can guide as to the right dosage for each individual.
