5 Home Remedies For Cavities

A dental cavity, also called dental caries, can grow deeper and bigger; and if not repaired early, it can cause excruciating toothache when small food particles get lodged in them. Tooth decay is to be blamed for cavity. Tooth decay occurs when food particles containing carbohydrates like bread, candy, fruits are left on the teeth.

The bacteria, food debris, acid and saliva together forms plaque and when the plaque clings to the teeth, it eats away the outermost layer of the tooth known as enamel and creates a hole known as cavity or caries. Both kids and adults can have teeth cavities. If your cavities are deeper, root canal treatment is necessary. But smaller cavities can be treated at home. There are excellent home remedies that can help you get rid of cavity pain.

Cloves and clove oil contain antiseptic properties and pressing clove on the affected tooth or applying clove oil with the help of a cotton ball can help relieve you from pain.

Another effective way to get rid of cavity pain is to mix a pinch of pepper powder and few drops of clove oil and apply the same on the cavity. Camphor oil can also be used for this purpose. It also works great for reducing the pain.

Use warm water while brushing teeth as it prevents bacteria from forming. Clean every corner of your teeth, even the area in which you are having pain.  Proper oral hygiene is necessary for avoiding pain. Also gargle every day and night with warm salted water.

Both garlic and onions have anti-fungal and anti bacterial properties. Those who consume raw onions regularly with their meal hardly get cavity. If you have cavity pain, place an onion slice directly on the aching tooth. You will get relief from pain.

For using garlic, make a paste out of garlic cloves and apply on the affected tooth after adding a pinch of rock salt. This will help to reduce the pain considerably.  Add garlic in your diet as it contains allicin that has antibiotic properties. Adding garlic in your regular diet will make your teeth strong and healthy.

Eating cheese like cheddar, blue and brie can prevent tooth decay. Cheese contains calcium and phosphate that acts as a protective barrier and guards tooth enamel. Acidic food causes tooth decay and cavities by breaking down calcium and phosphate. Munch on cheddar after meals to protect your teeth. This is a delicious as well as effective home remedy for cavities.

Sugar-free chewing gums are made with xylitol, which can forbid the build up of micro-organism in the mouth that causes cavity. So, chewing sugar free gum for 15-20 minutes after having meals will restrict the growth of bacteria and prevent cavity.

Chewing also helps to stimulate the saliva and flush out the debris. Also use tooth picks to remove the foods that have been stuck in between the teeth to prevent the cavities from developing.
