11 Common Home Remedies For Spider Bites

Spider bites are usually not very serious unless there is venom or an allergic reaction involved. Most stings and bites are healed on their own and you can treat the itching, pain, swelling, redness and various other reactions due to spider’s toxins with the help of home remedies. However, before trying any of these remedies it is important to know the type of spices that caused the spider bite. Brown recluse and black widow spider bites need emergency medical care. Spider bites usually appear as two close together punctures and resemble mosquito bites with or without pus.

1. Dried Basil

Basil leaves reduce the itch caused due to spider bite. Rub the crushed basil leaves on the irritated area.

Raw cabbage is considered to be a powerful remedy in healing spider bites. Grate a small piece of raw cabbage on a bandage. Leave this overnight on the affected area, which helps in the removing the toxic and heals the infection.

3. Activated Charcoal

Brown recluse bite can be treated effectively by using activated charcoal. The paste of activated charcoal is used on the affected part of the body. It is changed every 2 hours on the first day and the next day only for a few times. This treatment is continued until the bite has shrunk to just a slight scab.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has excellent antibacterial properties and hence used to treat insect bites. Wash the area affected by the spider bite with a solution of hydrogen peroxide.

5. Baking Soda

Mix together baking soda and water in the ratio of 3:1 to form a paste. Apply this paste to accelerate the curing process. Based on the intensity of the spider bite, you will notice changes in a few days. Also, you can mix equal amounts of butter and baking soda (this mixture is known as poultice) and place it on the area bitten by spider. This will relieve both itching and pain caused due to spider bite.

You can reduce swelling and get relief from spider bite by applying wet, cold washcloth or ice pack to the skin.

7. Olive Oil And Turmeric

Mix olive oil and turmeric to form a paste. This paste is quite effective in treating the redness and swelling due to spider bite. The treatment must be continued for 7 days, which will help in releasing the toxins. This combination also works well in relieving the pain.

8. Aspirin

In order to get relief from pain, it is essential to neutralize the poison and aspirin is quite effective in this regard. Soak the tablet in water until a paste is formed. Apply to the area of spider bite, which will alleviate itching. In some people, the symptoms are relieved in less than half an hour.

9. Salt

Wash the area affected by spider bite thoroughly and apply salt (kosher or sea salt is better). You can moisten a bandage and sprinkle some salt on the pad. This can be bandaged to the affected part.

10. Antibiotic Cream Or Lotion

The infection, especially in children can be reduced by using antibiotic cream or lotion.

11. Garlic

Apply garlic slices directly on the area and secure with bandage. This must be left overnight to get relief from the symptoms.
