Vaginitis is caused by a number of reasons but it most commonly occurs due to fungal infection which inflames the vagina and causes severe itching, burning, a foul smelling discharge and pain. The vagina comprises the muscular canal from the cervix to the outside of the body and its walls are lined with mucous membranes which become irritated and inflamed due to infections and due to the thinning of the lining known as the endothelium. If the estrogen levels in the body decrease then the endothelium becomes thin and fragile.
Vagintis is also caused by bacterial overgrowth and by the single celled protozoan pararsite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. This parasite is transmitted sexually and it can also infect the urethra. The Candida albicans which is a type of yeast and which is found in small amounts in the gut is mostly responsible for vaginitis. This yeast which is kept under control by the bacteria, grows rampantly and invades the vagina causing irritation, redness, swelling of the labia, pain and burning during urination and during sex and foul vaginal odor.
