Blackheads are said to be the first stage of acne. A wide opening in the skin filled with debris turns the skin into a blackened mass and this is known as a blackhead. When the hair follicle widens, it fills up with dead skin, keratin, bacteria and oil. A blackhead can develop into a pimple if left untreated. Blackheads generally develop after puberty when the hormone levels rise up and reach the skin.
The high levels of hormones in the skin stimulate the sebaceous glands which in turn start producing too much oil which accumulates and gets stuck in the pores. The oil attracts dust and grime and when it is exposed to the air, it becomes black. Though anyone can have blackheads, they are more common in people with an oily skin and in people who use topical oils and makeup. It is not necessary that all blackheads as the name implies, are black. Some are yellowish in color. Blackheads can also appear if the skin is not cleaned properly regularly. The dead skin cells together with dust and other particles build up within the pores and clog them.
