Canker sores are a common problem which everyone faces at some point in life. They are a common form of mouth ulcers and may be caused by viral infections or a weak immune system but the exact cause has not yet been determined. Canker sores can also be triggered by stress, hormonal changes, lack of vitamin B, folic acid and iron and food allergies. The sores are yellowish white and are surrounded by a red area. Though they are not cancerous they cause a lot of pain.
They usually appear on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips. They can also form on the sides of the tongue, underneath it, at the base of the gums and on the soft palate. There can be one single sore on one side of the cheek or there can be several inside the mouth. They generally appear in the form of a tiny bump or a red spot which turns into open sores. The middle of the ulcer is always white or yellow and there is a constant pain in it. It also makes speaking, eating and brushing the teeth very difficult.
