Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness that occurs due to an imbalance disorder caused in the balance of the inner ear. It is caused by the loose particles floating in the posterior semicircular canals of the inner ear. There is a feeling of spinning or whirling when there is no actual body movement. It is initiated by the sudden changes of the head position such as looking up or down or turning sideways. It can last for a few seconds, several hours, or even days.


Vertigo can be caused by inadequate blood supply to the brain, high blood pressure, calcium deficiency, thyroid disease and diabetes. Severe vertigo can cause nausea. It usually occurs in aged people but can affect young people too. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo can be treated at home.

Rind of Citrus Fruits

The rinds of citrus fruits such as oranges lemons and limes are rich in flavones, pectin and fibre. Take the rind of any of these fruits and grate it.

Add one tablespoon of the grated rind to half a cup of yogurt and eat. The whirling will gradually subside. Eat twice daily, till completely cured.

Dip a soft towel in chilled water. Squeeze out excess water. Place it on your forehead and eyes. Repeat several times. It will alleviate the spinning sensation.

Find Relief with Ginger Tea

Ginger is predominantly known for its medicinal and healing qualities. It is great in relaxing the muscles surrounding the blood vessels and helps eliminate nausea. Grate some fresh ginger.

Boil a glass of water and add to it one tablespoon of the grated ginger. Boil for two or three minutes. Strain and add honey. Drink this tea at least thrice a day.

Get up slowly from the bed. Sit in a cross legged position. With back erect and head straight, focus your eyes on some fixed point on the opposite wall. Breathe slowly and deeply. Amla is very rich in vitamin C, tannins, polpyhenols, flavonoids and pectin. It is largely used to treat many disorders. It increases immunity and production of red blood cells.

Swallow one teaspoon of dried amla powder every morning for several weeks. Boil fresh amla in water for a few minutes. Blend in a mixer. Strain to remove Juice. Add sugar and drink one glass everyday.  You can even keep taking it routinely for general health.


Eat lots of Strawberries

The vitamin C in strawberries is very beneficial in vertigo. Cut strawberries in pieces. Mix them in half cup of yogurt. Add some chopped almonds, one teaspoon of sugar and eat.

Intake of caffeine should be minimized or stopped completely. Caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee only aggravates the problem.
