Homemade Shampoo For Lice

A shampoo can be prepared for destroying the lice at home. For this, you can use a normal shampoo, preferably a herbal shampoo as the base. Add 4 tablespoons of olive oil, one teaspoon each of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. Olive oil acts as a melting agent which helps in the melting of exoskeletons of the lice. Apply the shampoo on the hair and head and leave it on for an hour. Wash off after that. This will take care of all the head lice.

Aloe

Being a gel in consistency and also antibacterial in nature, aloe helps by killing the lice by smothering them in the gel and also by destroying the bacteria in their gut, making them incapable of digesting food and killing them in the long run. Take fresh gel from the aloe plant and apply large quantities on your scalp and hair.

You might want to cover your head with a shower cap after this. Leave it on for a few hours and reapply the gel couple of times in between to retain the effect of the gel and suffocate as much lice as possible. Aloe works on the head by healing the wounds caused due to scratching and sucking if blood by the lice and also prevents intense itching due to the movement of the lice. After this, you can use a nit comb dipped in vinegar for removing the dead lice. Repeat several times.

Vinegar

Vinegar treatment is an essential procedure after you have removed all the lice through other home remedies. Vinegar is very acidic and helps in killing the lice, though not entirely. But they are very effective in controlling the spread as they can melt the nit glue and remove the nits from the hair.

Nits that remain in the hair can hatch and cause the infection to surface again. Apply vinegar on the hair and scalp and after an hour, use nit comb for removing the nits and lice. This will stop the infection completely. Ensure that you use vinegar at least twice a week to kill all the nits that have the potential for multiplying and spreading the infestation.

Butter treatment

Using butter on the scalp and hair works in almost the same manner as mayonnaise. It will smother the lice and kill them and also prevent the lice from moving. Apply butter amply on the scalp and hair and cover your hair and scalp with a shower cap.

You can also mix some lemon juice along with the butter so that the nit glue will also melt. After half an hour, wipe your hair and scalp with a cotton towel and with a nit comb, pull out the dead lice and nits. This treatment has to be repeated several times for good results. Thick butter is better for this treatment than low fat butter.

Neem Paste

Neem is antiviral in nature and helps in treating any wounds that are present on the scalp as well as a result of repeated scratching. Take adequate amounts of neem leaves and grind to form a paste with lemon or water. Apply on the scalp and hair and leave it for a few hours. Neem paste will smother the lice and once the paste turns dry, the lice that were not killed already would also be suffocated to death due to the dryness and friction. Wash off and then use a nit comb for removing dead lice and loosened nit.

Custard Apple Paste

A paste created with custard apple along with the seeds is known to be a natural insecticide and can be used for killing the head lice. Crush a few custard apples and use a mixer for forming a paste. Apply on the scalp and hair and leave for an hour. Comb the hair using a nit comb afterwards to remove dead lice. Repeat as often as needed.

Garlic Massage

Garlic has antibacterial properties that help in killing the good bacteria in the gut, which is essential for digestion of food. Once this happens, the lice cannot live longer and will die. You can make a mixture of garlic oil and lemon juice as well for application and destruction of the head lice.

Take several garlic cloves and make it into a paste. Apply on the scalp, taking care to cover the hair as well. Massage right into the scalp for ten minutes and leave it on for 3-4 hours. Wash off after that with a good shampoo. This treatment can be repeated every day until all the lice are killed. If you apply garlic oil, you can leave it overnight and wash off in the morning.

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly too can be applied on the scalp and hair for killing the lice by suffocating them. For a stronger remedy, mix lemon juice or vinegar along with petroleum jelly and apply a thick coat on the scalp and hair. Allow it to remain for 5-6 hours and wipe off with a cotton towel. Use the not comb for removing dead lice and nits. The procedure has to be repeated for several days and weeks for all the lice and nits to be removed form you head. It is also essential to sent all your clothes and bed linen for a hot water treatment to prevent further infestation.
