Dark knees or ashy knees become the bane of our existence during summer time when we want to wear short clothes and flaunt our slim legs and or perfect tan. However, dark knees come in between our plans to look sexy. Dark knees are commonly seen in people who suffer from very dry skin. People with dark complexion also have dark and ashy knees. The problem of ashy knees can affect both men and women irrespective of their age. The color of the skin around the knees becomes extremely dark, so much so that it stands out in stark contrast to the color of the rest of the skin.

Dark skin is not treated as a medical condition; it is more of a beauty condition and can therefore be treated using many cosmetic products. But the creams and lotions formulated for treating dark ashy knees are expensive and not always deliver what they promise. Hence to treat dark knees one must always use the trusted and tried home remedies. There are many effective yet simple home remedies to lighten the color of the knees. However, you have to be regular with the treatments and you can even use two or more natural treatments at the same time since these treatments are without any side effects.

Tips For Lightening Dark Knees

1. Baking Soda

Dark and ashy knees can sometimes be the result of accumulation of dead skin cells on the knees. If these skin cells are not removed they turn dark in color by interacting with the oxygen present in the air. Baking soda is an excellent natural scrub and should be used on the dark knees regularly to get rid of the dead and flaky dark skin. Simply make a paste of baking powder using water. Apply the paste on the dark knees and leave for about five minutes. After five minutes wet your hands and start scrubbing the knees on which baking soda paste has been applied. Scrub well for 7-10 minutes or even longer. The skin on the knees is stronger and thicker compared with that of the rest of the body. Hence you can scrub easily without worrying about any abrasions. Once the knees have been scrubbed properly remove the baking soda paste using water. Towel dry the knees and while they are still slightly damp immediately apply generous amounts of moisturizing cream on the knees. You should do this treatment every day for a period of two weeks. The skin on your knees would have lightened considerably. After this you can do the treatment every alternate day.

2. Oatmeal Scrub

Mix two tablespoons powdered oatmeal with two teaspoons fresh cream. If you don’t have fresh cream then use cold cream or honey. Apply the resulting paste on the knees and leave for two minutes. Now gently start massaging the paste on the knees. Wet your hands if the paste becomes dry. Use only the tips of your fingers for massaging. After massaging both the knees for 10 minutes wash off the oatmeal scrub using cold water. Oatmeal is a natural exfoliator much like baking soda. It effectively removes the layer of dead skin cells from the knees giving them a lightened and clean look. You should always apply a moisturizer after washing and drying the knees. This will help lock in the moisture in the skin.
