Sleep disorder is medical condition where the sleep pattern of the patient gets haywire. If you are suffering from an inability to fall asleep and remain so for some time then you are suffering from sleep disorders. This is also known as insomnia. This results in sleep deprivation, and the results of sleep deprivation are all too prominently reflected in your day to day work.

You may be dozing off in the middle of work or caught napping while attending board meeting. There may be various causes behind sleep disorders some of which can be explained while some others can not be explained. But whatever be the cause sleep disorders must be treated. Otherwise, the person will become depressed.

It may even lead to other and more severe physical and mental abnormalities. You may not need to approach a doctor for treating your sleep disorder. Although it is imperative to check if there is any underlying physical or mental disorder, sleep disorder per se can be treated with home remedies. Let us discuss some of these.

Home Remedies For Sleep Disorders

Sticking To A Schedule

Old habits die hard. If you have a habit of going to bed at defined times of the day then it is really difficult for you not to fall asleep at those times. So make it a habit to go to bed at scheduled times of the night. This will prepare your body to relax at those times only. Even if you are not able to fall asleep for the first few days you will obviously be able to catch some sleep after a few days. So stick to a schedule and go to bed at those times every day.

Get Up If Not Able To Sleep

You are not able to sleep, yet you are lying down and staring blankly at the roof. This is not going to work. If you are not able to catch sleep get out of the bed. Try doing something that is soothing for your eyes. You can also read a book. Do not try hard to fall asleep. This is not going to let you sleep.

On the other hand you may become more anxious and depressed. Splash your eyes with some cold water. This will cool the agitate nerves and help you to sleep. You can also have a walk or talk to your spouse. But watching television is not recommended. It may strain the eyes and disturb your further.

Environment

A conductive environment is essential for getting a good sleep. You may feel at ease when the light is out and there is a light music playing in low volume. Whatever it is something that is soothing for your nerves will give you good sleep. You should strive to get such an environment. You will automatically be able to get a good sleep. But along with this you should refrain from taking too much of alcohol and caffeine. These substances interfere with the normal schedule of sleep.

Chamomile Tea

It is available in stores. Chamomile tea has been found to have a sleep-inducing effect. You can try a cup of warm chamomile tea before bedtime. However, you may need to visit the urinal at least once in the night.

Milk


It has been seen that drinking a glass of warm milk before bedtime is a good remedy for sleep disorders. It has been inferred in scientific studies that a compound present in milk known as tryptophan has some sleep-inducing effect. That is why it is a tradition in many cultures to drink a glass of milk before bedtime.

Exercise

Exercise makes you sweat, relax and physically fatigued. Moreover, when you exercise there is a production of feel good hormones called endorphins. It also reduces the production of stress hormones such as cortisole. This will dispel some of the anxiety and depression associated with sleep disorders. Heavy aerobic and cardiovascular exercise also enhances blood circulation. So get some heavy exercise at least 5 hours before your scheduled bed time.

Sugar Or Honey

Sugar is not always bad for you. It has been seen that sugar has a sedative effect on the mind. You have to take a bit of sugar or sugary food at least half an hour before bedtime.

You are most likely to fall asleep. You can also take honey. It also has the same effect on the nervous system. But along with this you must limit the intake of food in dinner. A large meal before bedtime does not aid in falling asleep.
