12 Easy Home Remedies To Treat Knee Pain

Aching knees is a common complaint, especially after the age of 45. Besides injury, the common causes for knee pain include fatigue, osteoarthritis and over exertion of the knee joint while running or exercising. Knee pain can be debilitating and may even require knee replacement surgery, if not treated early. Traditional medicines are often very harsh and come with side effects. Here are 12 easy home remedies that can bring relief from knee pain naturally and prevent it from getting severe.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain:

Ginger

Ginger is one of the most effective remedies for knee pain as it contain anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and a small amount of analgesic properties. Ginger can be taken in various forms. It comes in capsules, teas, powders, tinctures, oils and dried or fresh root of the ginger derived from ginger plant. Consuming ginger tea made by adding fresh root of crushed ginger in water everyday can bring relief from pain and inflammation. Massaging your knee with ginger oil regularly can also bring relief. Similarly, taking ginger capsule can help to reduce knee-pain significantly.

Turmeric

Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory properties. The active ingredient known as curcumin contained in it makes it a powerful antioxidant. It has been used for generations as a great remedy for relieving people from pain and inflammation. It helps to lower the levels of enzymes that cause inflammation. You can add turmeric in milk, make tea by adding little honey or take it in capsule form to treat knee pain.

Carrots

Drinking antioxidant rich carrot juice can bring relief from knee pain. Carrot is a popular remedy for aching joints in Chinese folk medicine. After juicing the carrots, add some lemon juice and drink. Eating raw or steamed carrot may also bring relief by nurturing the ligaments.

Epsom Salt Soak

Epsom salt is a rich source of magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate, which is a naturally occurring mineral, brings relief from pain and inflammation. Add 2 cup of Epsom salt in warm water and soak your knees in this water for 15-20 minutes to find relief from pain.

Egg Yolk and Walnut Paste

If injury is causing you knee pain, application of egg yolk and walnut paste will bring quick relief. For making this effective paste, mix together 2 egg yolks, 2tbsp castor oil and 1tsp fish oil. Then add 2tsp turmeric powder. Heat the mixture and apply on your knees while it is still warm. Cover the area with a clean cloth and leave overnight. Wash off in the morning with warm water. Repeat the application until pain is reduced completely.

Fenugreek Seeds

Soak a spoonful of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water overnight. In the morning strain the water and chew the seeds. The warm nature of fenugreek will help to heal the joints and bring relief from pain.

Massage

Massaging the knees with mustard oil after adding whole cloves of garlic and heating it for few minutes is a tried and tested remedy for knee pain. Massage thoroughly with warm oil for fighting pain and inflammation. It provides immediate relief from pain.

Cold Compress

Use of ice pack on the aching knees can help to soothe inflammation and reduce pain and swelling. In a clean cloth, wrap three or four ice cubes and place on the aching knees for 10-15 minutes. Keep moving the ice in circular motion. Don’t fix them in a particular spot; it can damage your skin. Apply cold compress two times a day until pain subsides.

Heat Therapy

Like cold compress, application of heat can also bring relief from knee pain. Use hot water bag on the affected knee for reducing pain at least 3-4 times a day. Taking hot shower or immersing yourself in hot water can also bring relief.

Almond, Walnut and Milk

Boil a glass of milk after adding 1tsp crushed almond and 1 tsp walnut powder and also add a pinch of turmeric. When milk is reduced to half, bring it to room temperature and drink. Drinking this milk everyday will strengthen knee joints and bring considerable relief from knee pain.

Keep Moving

Don’t do rigorous exercise when you have knee pain. But it is necessary to keep your legs moving to keep the joints flexible. Eat a healthy balanced diet to keep your weight in control as excess weight can put pressure on the knee joint.

Drink Enough Water

Drink water as much as you can. It will help to soften the cartilage and keep them hydrated. It will also add volume to your blood and allow nutrients to move freely through the blood as well as to the joints. By moving the waste out of your body, water also helps to keep the joints healthy.
