Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease in which the level of glucose in the blood is very high. This disease can occur at any age but is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Beta cells which are found in the pancreas produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to move the glucose from the blood to the cells where it is stored for energy.

The glucose keeps building up in the blood stream as there is no insulin to move it to the cells and the body is unable to use this glucose for energy. The main symptoms of this disease are extreme fatigue, excessive thirst or hunger, blurred vision, tingling in the feet and frequent urination. In severe cases this disease can lead to kidney failure, heart disease, liver damage and neuropathy.
