Thrush is caused by yeast fungus known as Candida albicans which infects the mucous membranes in the mouth. This is a superficial infection that involves the tongue, inner lip region, gums and the tongue. This infection is usually seen in babies and sometimes it also affects toddlers.
It is rarely seen in older children and adults. If adults have this infection then it is due to some underlying disease like diabetes and cancer and its medication. The main symptoms of this infection are white or yellow colored raised spots in the mouth which do not cause any pain but if you scrape them off they leave bleeding sores on the skin. This fungus is always present in the mouth but it does not cause any problems unless the healthy bacteria in the mouth get destroyed by overabundance of antibiotics and cause an overgrowth of the fungus.
Babies should be given sterilized water immediately after every feed of milk. The water flushes away the traces of residual milk in the mouth and prevents the candida from flourishing in the oral cavity. In addition to this, all the feeding equipment and mouth toys of the baby should be sterilized everyday.
