When the immune system of the body becomes over energetic it starts damaging the healthy tissues of the body resulting in lupus or autoimmune disease. The immune system produces antibodies which combat against antigens like bacteria and viruses.
Lupus makes the immune system lose its ability to distinguish between antibodies and healthy tissues and leads the antibodies to attack the healthy tissues causing swelling and pain in the joints, skin rashes and tissue damage. This disease can affect both males and females.
Systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE is more severe than discoid lupus. SLE can affect the kidneys, heart and lungs while discoid lupus is restricted to the skin and is manifested by a rash on the neck, face and scalp. Lupus can be caused by exposure to certain chemical compounds found in water and dust, ultraviolet rays, antibiotics containing sulfonamides and stress.
Fish oil is very safe and valuable in the cure of lupus. The omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil reduce swelling and mitigate the pain in the joints. Take two to three teaspoons of fish oil daily.
Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fats take care of chronic diseases and are necessary to reduce inflammation. The oil lubricates the joints providing immense relief. Take three teaspoons of flaxseed oil daily.
Grape seed extract is a natural source of bioflavonoids that protect the body tissues from damage and strengthen the weak tissues. Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiallergenic qualities aid blood circulation and fortify the blood vessels. Take two tablespoons of grape seed extract powder daily.
Pine bark extract is full of natural chemicals that are antioxidants and fight disease. The substance pygenol available in pine bark extract reduces swelling and pain in the joints. It makes the joints more flexible and increases the blood circulation. Take thirty milligrams of pine bark extract with yogurt everyday.
Evening primrose oil is very beneficial in discoid lupus. Continuous use of this oil on the affected area will considerably alleviate the rashes, increase the circulation of blood to the skin and maintain skin health.
Apart from these remedies dietary measures should also be adopted. Foods rich in the vitamin B- complex group such as beans, nuts and milk should be taken to maintain and sustain the health of the skin and nerves. Vitamin E found in whole grains, sunflower seeds and hazelnut is most essential for the maintenance and strength of the immune system.
It also prevents damage to the healthy tissues of the body. Vitamin C which is indispensable is required for the growth and repair of tissues throughout the body. It promotes immunity by enhancing the body’s defenses and prevents the free radicals from invading the body.
Vitamin C is present in amla, all citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges and guava. Daily exercise is another remedial factor that will help in the treatment of lupus. It helps reduce stress. It loosens up the tensed muscles, stimulates blood circulation, releases more oxygen to the brain and rejuvenates the body.
