Dry eyes are generally caused by ageing. The tears in the eyes provide constant moisture to the eyes. Tears consist of water to keep the eyes moist, oil to keep the eyes lubricated and mucous to spread the two evenly. Besides these there are also antibodies; to prevent infection and proteins to rebuild damaged cells.
Special glands situated around the eyes secrete tears. When this tear system becomes imbalanced or the glands stop producing sufficient tears, a person is said to suffer from dry eyes.
Dryness causes pain in the eyes, there can be a gritty feeling, the eyes can become sensitive to light, the vision can be impaired and there can be intense itching accompanied by redness. The condition of dry eyes can also occur if the tear film dries out completely. The main causes of dry eyes are exposure to smoke, dry heat, alcohol, certain medicines and allergic conditions and menopause.
Soak a clean soft cloth in hot water. Wring out the excess water. Lie on your back and place the cloth on your eyes. Keep the cloth till it becomes cold. Then dip the cloth again and apply. Do this several times. Your eyes will feel soothed. The heat will stimulate the glands and the moisture will help to unblock them and start the flow of tears again.
Aloe vera is simply marvelous in curing many diseases and ailments. Besides being absolutely safe, it is easily available and cheap too. Apply aloe vera drops on the eyelids. Do not put the drops inside the eyes but smear the eyelids with them. The alkaline nature of aloe vera neutralizes the acidic condition and reduces the gritty sensation in the eyes.
Coriander seeds have anti-inflammatory properties that protect the eyes, reduce the pain and alleviate the burning sensation. Its essential oils make a good lubricant. Boil one teaspoon of coriander seeds in one cup of water. Boil for two minutes. When the water has cooled strain it and gently wash your eyes with this water. Do this at least twice a day to restore moisture to the eyes.
The presence of polyunsaturated fats like omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for human health make fish oil a very advantageous remedy for dry eyes.
Omega 3 fatty acids reduce swelling, get rid of chronic disorders and eliminate vision and nerve problems. They perk up the blood circulation and increase the flow of tears. Take one or two teaspoons of fish oil daily. Include fish in your daily diet.
Black current seed oil is a valuable source of gamma linolenic acid which considerably relieves the symptoms of dry eyes. It has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It builds immunity and develops body functions. Take two teaspoons of this oil twice a day.
In addition to these remedies, you need to take a nourishing diet full of vitamins and minerals that maintain and promote eye health. You need antioxidants such as lutein to dispose of the waste matter in the retina which in turn will reduce the risk of eye diseases and prevent degeneration of tissues. Dark green leafy vegetables are a good source of lutein.
