Dryness of the throat can be due to several reasons, including excessive talking and lack of hydration due to poor intake of water. It can also be associated with a sore and infected throat and due to sleeping with an open mouth.
Simple remedies at home can easily tackle the situation and ease the irritation and discomfort associated with dry throat. Here are a few of them that you can try at home and ease the discomfort before it becomes worse.
Sometimes the throat can get dry after you talk for a long time. In such cases, it is the larynx that is irritated and dry and need rest before it can get back to its normal state. Be sure to take adequate rest by talking less and allowing your throat and larynx to heal after the exertion. This will take care of the dryness of your throat.
Honey is a humectant and natural moisturizing agent that can help in treating dry throat. Take fresh and organic honey and add this to one cup of warm water.
Take this 2-3 times a day. Along with this, adequate rest for your throat too is recommended, failing which the throat dryness will get worse. Honey will keep the throat from getting scratchy and tickly due to lack of moisture. It will also prevent soreness due to the friction on the walls of the throat.
Gargling your throat with salt water is one of the best ways by which you can treat the dryness of your throat. Take half a teaspoon of salt and add this to a glass of warm water. This can be used for gargling the throat. Gargling will help in moisturizing the dry throat and will also keep remove any bacteria that can lead to a cough or sore throat later on.
Apple cider vinegar is also an excellent remedy for moisturizing and treating dry throat. Take one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and add to one cup of warm water.
Use this for gargling the throat. This will take care of cough and cold which too can cause dryness in the throat. Apple cider vinegar will also restore the pH balance in the mouth, thereby keeping the throat well moisturized.
Citrus fruits can help in preventing your throat from becoming dry due to infections and cold. Squeeze the juice and add to a glass of warm water. Drink with a tablespoon of honey to get an instant moisturizing effect on the throat. Citrus fruits are also rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant and hence can boost the immune system and prevent recurrent cough, cold and nasal blockage that can lead to dry throat. Orange juice too is an excellent remedy for treating dry throat.
Anything warm can help in the soothing process of a dry and irritated throat. It can be warm juices, tea or a herbal tea than can moisturize the throat and help it to stay hydrated. However, diuretics like caffeinated drinks and alcohol is not recommended when you have dry throat as it can lead to more dehydration and worsen the symptoms of dry throat.
Drinking plenty of water is very essential, especially when you have dry throat. Warm water will help in replenishing the lost moisture in the throat and will immediately remove the discomfort and pain that can surface form a dry throat. Drink plenty of warm water to prevent throat irritation, itching and dryness. Warm water will soothe the dry throat and will also keep it well moisturized.
Steaming is another way to moisten the throat. This can be done when you take bath. Open the tap and allow hot water to pour out into the bathroom after closing all the doors and windows.
Inhale deeply through your mouth so that the steam reaches the mouth and moisturizes the throat. Continue for fifteen minutes and repeat couple of times a day. You may also want to try boiling a pot full of water and inhale the steam by covering your mouth and the neck of the pot with a thick cotton cloth or towel.
Lack of saliva in the mouth too can cause dryness in the throat. There are several reasons for low production of saliva. Whatever the reason may be, a quick remedy is to chew a gum. Chewing a gum will stimulate the salivary glands and increase the production of saliva in the mouth. This will help in naturally moisturizing the throat that is dry. An unsweetened variety of chewing gum will be a better option as sweet gum may aggravate the dryness of the throat if it is due to a yeast infection like thrush.
Licorice tea is excellent for treating a dry throat. Take a tablespoon of licorice and add this to one cup of boiling water. Steep for a few minutes and take this 2-3 times a day. This will ease the symptoms of dryness and offer great relief for the sufferer.
Lozenges are cheap and can easily tackle a dry throat. They too stimulate saliva production and this will in turn cure a dry throat. There are many brands available for purchase and they are very effective as a quick and effective home remedy for dry throats. Hard candy too can have the same effect as lozenges and are preferred home remedies for dry throat. However, they are not suitable for kids as they pose the risk of a choking hazard if not careful.
Sage leaves too are very helpful in treating a dry throat. The leaves can be boiled along with a cup of water and steeped for close to ten minutes before taking it warm. Sage leaves also remove any bacterial and viral action that is associated with cough, cold and other respiratory tract infections that can also lead to a dry and itchy throat. Take several times a day for fast relief for dry throat.
