A dry scalp is a very common phenomenon. It occurs when the natural oils on the head are stripped away. This could occur due to poor nourishment of the scalp or a faulty diet. Certain lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking and taking drugs too can affect the health of your scalp.
Luckily, you do not have to spend thousands and thousands of rupees buying expensive cosmetics. With the help of simple home remedies, you can easily treat a dry scalp.
Take a few tablespoons of olive oil in a bowl. To it, add some honey and milk. Mix it all well together and apply it liberally on the scalp. Leave it on for at least 2 hours before washing it off. Once the solution has dried on the head, wash it off with a shampoo and conditioner. Your hair will feel well moisturized and no longer dry.
There is nothing like a hot oil massage to keep the scalp and the head healthy. Take olive oil or coconut oil whichever suits you. Heat it and massage it well into your hair. Wet a towel in hot water and wrap the towel around your head. Leave it on for 20 minutes before washing it off with a mild shampoo.
Peppermint oil is an essential oil, which is very good for the health of the scalp. It reduces scalp inflammation and itchiness and leaves a lovely fragrance in its wake. Use peppermint oil liberally in your hair 2-3 times a week for best results.

Shea butter is well known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties that help to soothe an irritated and dry scalp. Take some shea butter in a bowl. Add one cup of olive oil and one teaspoon of vitamin E oil and bring this to a slow boil over a double boiler. Once it has boiled, let it cool down sufficiently. Now take this mixture and apply it liberally on the scalp. Your scalp will feel thoroughly moisturized and healthy in appearance.
Onion and rum have been used in the olden times to tackle scalp problems. Take a few slices of onion and dip them in the rum. Let this ferment in the rum for a few hours. Once the onion has completely dissolved, rub this liquid onion and rum mixture all over your scalp. Wash off as usual. Your hair will feel silky and soft.
Take a few drops of eucalyptus oil and about 20 drops of tea tree oil. Mix it well together and give it a nice shake. Now apply this mixture and massage it well into your scalp. Tea tree oil has medicinal properties that help to heal the scalp especially if you are suffering from dry dandruff.
Sesame seed oil has been found to be useful in combating a dry and itchy scalp. Just massage the oil into your scalp and let the oil seep into your head by putting a hot towel. Wash the oil off after 3-4 hours. You will find that the itchiness and dryness has reduced considerably. Continue with this treatment for as long as necessary.
Lemon juice may dry out your scalp if not used the right way. Just quickly rub the juice of one lime on your scalp and wash off immediately after ten minutes. Your scalp will no longer feel itchy. A better solution would be to mix it with curd to reduce its potency on the scalp.
Take some peels of a used lemon and combine it with coconut oil. Leave this oil out in the sun for a few days so that the two combine well. Strain the mixture and use this to massage your head with the oil. The lemon and coconut together are very effective in tackling a dry and itchy scalp.
You can add the juice of one lemon and combine it with the whites of an egg. Use this mixture on your head and scalp. The egg provides protein while the lemon juice keeps the scalp healthy and dandruff free.
