A carbuncle is a collection of multiple infected hair follicles and is usually caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. They are somewhat similar to boils as the cause behind the boils is none other than Staphylococcus aureus. The only difference between the two is their size and location. Only one hair follicle gets influenced due to the boils, which is known as furuncle.
They generally appear on armpits, buttocks, groin or even on the face. On the other hand, a carbuncle is contagious and larger when compared to a boil and can turn lethal. In short, you can refer to it as several skin boils. Middle-aged men are more prone to carbuncles when compared to women, and it usually appears on the shoulders, thighs, hips, and back of the neck.
The size of a carbuncle may be small or large. People with diabetes, dermatitis, low immunity, poor hygiene, and poor health condition are more prone to carbuncles and boils. There are few natural methods to treat carbuncles, and they are mentioned below.

Tea Tree Oil
Though tea tree oil is an antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic agent, its effectiveness against carbuncle is not scientifically proven. Anecdotal evidence suggests that application of the tea tree oil onto the carbuncle may eliminate the infection, and the discomfort caused due to it.
Use a cotton swab to apply the oil onto the carbuncle. Dispose the used cotton swab in a plastic bag (sealed) to prevent the possibility of infecting other body parts as well as others.
Turmeric powder also eliminates carbuncles as it is a blood purifier and has anti-inflammatory properties. Have a glass of Luke warm water to which one teaspoon of turmeric powder is added. Drink this three times a day as soon as you develop a carbuncle.
Make a paste of fresh ginger and turmeric, slightly warm this paste and apply it directly onto the carbuncle. Since turmeric can lead to constipation and dehydration when consumed in high dosage, use this remedy only if it is very necessary.
Place a clean cloth dipped in slightly warm salt water onto the carbuncle. Do this for 15 minutes and 5 times a day to relieve pressure caused due to the carbuncle.
By doing this, the carbuncle will appear on the head, and hence the healing process will be quick. Sterilize the cloth once you have finished doing this.
Onions are considered as a natural carbuncle cure as it has antiseptic chemicals. The chemicals can act as an antimicrobial irritant.
Use a cloth strip to tie a thick onion slice onto the carbuncle and repeat this every 3-4 hours by changing the onion slice until the carbuncle appears on the head and drains. Proper disposal of the used onion slices is very important so that it is not under the reach of animals.
The carbuncle can be soothed by using a hot compress so that the pus from it drains once the carbuncle appears on the head. Wash the pus with antibacterial soap and Luke warm water. Repeat this procedure 2-3 times in a day.
Place a banana skin (warm) onto the carbuncle for a simple natural remedy. The carbuncle will appear on the head thus healing the infection.
